Buva Sea Cambodia is one of the leading ferry operators in the country, mainly serving the beautiful islands off the coast of Sihanoukville. The ferries on these routes have a maximum capacity of 50 passengers and the operator is linked to the bus company Virak Buntham.

Sihanoukville–Koh Rong

The ferry operator is based in Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s most popular beach destination. There are seven ferries each day from Sihanoukville to the island of Koh Rong, with departures throughout the day from 08.00 until 17.00. There are also seven return ferries each day which depart Koh Rong between 07.00 and 17.00, with the short 30-minute trip costing USD11 in either direction.

Sihanoukvill–Koh Rong Samloem

From Sihanoukville you can also visit Koh Rong Samloem, with four ferries a day heading in both directions. Ferries depart Sihanoukville at 08.00, 11.00, 14.00 and 17.00, with boats heading back to the mainland between 07.00 and 15.30. The trip only takes 30 minutes and is also priced at USD11.

This may make it too difficult to reach the islands on the same day if you are traveling a long distance, such as from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. The early departure time may mean that you have to stay in Sihanoukville for at least one night before you travel to the islands by ferry the next morning. This may not too much of an inconvenience, unless you are on a fairly tight schedule, in which case this could put you off from visiting the islands.

Although it is useful that Buva Sea Cambodia has links with Virak Buntham, the bus operator is not regarded as one of the most popular providers in the country and there have been complaints and issues around the cleanliness of the buses. Although they are one of the cheapest operators in Cambodia, visitors may want to use another service, depending on their budget and itinerary.

It is worth noting that the ferries between Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Samloem have a capacity of just 30 passengers, compared to the larger boats, which can hold 50 passengers, between Sihanoukville and Koh Rong.

The biggest issue passengers have with Buva Sea Cambodia is the absence of services after 17.00. For some, this final departure time is just too early and can cause inconvenience if you are traveling directly from another city or town in Cambodia, as it can be a stretch to arrive at the port in Sihanoukville for this time.

Some visitors may feel as though the ticket price is a little excessive for such a short journey, especially when compared to the bargains that can be had on long bus trips across the country, but the fares are no higher than the cost of tickets with other operators along this route.
